Last week, we had the opportunity to attend a networking meeting in the old Watch Tower building in DUMBO Height Brooklyn, NY.
Now owned by Wework, this building has become a multilevel community building that provides event & office space for entrepreneurs. Dedicated to helping small businesses flourish in Brooklyn.

About the Organizer

The event was hosted by The Brooklyn United Music and Art Program, a local organization committed to supporting young people through performance, discipline, and mentorship. It's led by Ty Brown, the Founder and Executive Director of the Brooklyn United Marching Band.

Ty has long been recognized for his impact-he was featured in BE Modern Man on May 10, 2016, for his leadership and community work. His dedication continues today, with Brooklyn United still thriving as a space for youth empowerment.

You can learn more about his recent work in this article from Brooklyn Paper or visit the Brooklyn United website to see what they’re working on now.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Jean Alerte

The keynote speaker of the evening was Dr. Jean Alerte, originally from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. A published author and longtime advocate for entrepreneurship and youth  mentorship, Dr. Alerte brought insight on marketing, sales, and leadership to the room.

At the time, he served as the Executive Director of Unity of the Community Foundation, helping college-bound high school students through mentorship and scholarship programs. He was also the founder of Brooklyn Swirl, a frozen yogurt shop in Brooklyn that served the community for several years. While the location has since closed, his commitment to building up local business remains.

Today, Dr. Alerte continues to help others build and grow - he now works in real estate as a licensed agent with Compass, where he helps clients navigate home buying, selling, and investing in New York.

Final Thoughts

Networking Works was one of several local events we joined to support entrepreneurs, connect with the community, and share our desserts with new audiences. These events gave us a chance to be part of something bigger, bringing people together around food, inspiration, and shared goals.

At the time, Legacy Cakery focused on custom cupcakes and dessert tables for live events. While we’re no longer involved in social events or vendor pop-ups, those experiences helped shape our brand and built lasting relationships in Brooklyn and beyond.

Today, we’ve shifted our focus to shipping cake jars nationwide, still made with the same love, just packaged for your doorstep.
