What’s Inside a Cake Jar? Layers, Freshness, and How It’s Built

Three cake jars showing layers and toppings, including birthday-themed labels.
Cake jars are more than just cute desserts in containers, they’re layered, thoughtful, and made to surprise someone with a treat that feels just as good as it tastes.
Whether you're shopping for a gift, stocking up for a party, or treating yourself to something indulgent, cake jars bring all the joy of cake in a perfectly packed jar.

Want to know why people love gifting them? Read our post on what makes cake jars the perfect gift.

But what actually goes into a cake jar? And why does it stay so fresh, even after shipping?

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how each jar is made, what flavors you can expect, and why these mini cakes have become one of our most-loved products.

Built from Scratch, One Layer at a Time

Step-by-step photos of cake jars being prepped: sanitized jars, mixing red velvet batter, and baking the cake in a sheet pan
From clean jars to baked sheets, every batch starts with scratch-made batter and careful prep before layering.
We start by prepping the jars, clean, dry, and ready to be filled. Our jars are food-safe plastic with secure screw-top lids, which keep them lightweight for shipping but still tight enough to hold in the freshness.

Then we bake a full sheet cake for each batch, one flavor at a time. We don’t use pre-mixed bases or mass-produced fillings. Each tray is leveled, cooled, and cut using a round cutter that matches the size of our cake jars.

We build every jar with two layers of cake and a generous layer of filling in between. This method creates a soft, satisfying bite without being too dense or overloaded. It’s the perfect balance between cake and frosting, and it allows each flavor to shine without overpowering the others.
Step-by-step photos showing red velvet cake rounds being layered with frosting into a clear jar by hand.
Each cake jar is hand-assembled - starting with fresh cake rounds, piped frosting, and a final sprinkle of crumbs on top.
The final swirl or topping is piped in cleanly, then sealed, labeled, and packed for delivery.

Why Cake Jars Work So Well

The layered build isn’t just for looks, it serves a purpose. Because everything is vertically stacked, cake jars travel better than traditional slices or cupcakes. There’s no frosting shift or smashed corners.

The tight lid locks in moisture, so the texture stays fresh whether it’s eaten the day it arrives or saved for later.

And for gifting? Cake jars are unbeatable. You don’t need a knife, a plate, or a fridge, just a spoon and someone worth celebrating.

They’re also easier to portion and personalize. One person can try multiple flavors without cutting into a full cake. You can send a single jar as a surprise or a full mix as a gift set. It’s flexible, fun, and full of options.

A Look at the Flavor Lineup

We currently offer six signature flavors, each built with care, distinct layers, and custom fillings that match the mood. Here’s what you’ll find inside each jar:

Red Velvet

Classic red velvet cake with rich cream cheese frosting. A soft, vibrant crumb and that signature tangy finish make this one of our best-sellers. Made to share, but hard to resist.

Birthday Cake

Vanilla cake layered with vanilla buttercream and sprinkles. It’s nostalgic, playful, and perfect with a scoop of ice cream. Whether it’s your actual birthday or just a Tuesday, this one always feels festive.

Lemon Drop

Lemon cake paired with lemon curd mousse. Bright, rich, and full of citrus flavor - it’s light enough for summer, rich enough for gifting, and refreshing all year round.

Death by Chocolate

This one lives up to the name: layers of chocolate cake, ganache, chocolate buttercream, Oreo crumbs, and chocolate chips. A serious hit for chocolate lovers, and a favorite for those who like their desserts bold and decadent.

Brooklyn Black & White

Inspired by the classic NYC cookie, this jar brings together chocolate and vanilla in balanced layers. It’s soft, rich, and nostalgic, perfect for those who like a little of both.

Pretty in Pink

Strawberry cake layered with whipped mousse. Sweet, fruity, and easy to love. This one stands out visually and pairs well with fresh berries or a chilled spoon straight from the jar.

Freshness That Travels

One of the most common questions we get is: How do cake jars stay fresh during shipping?

It starts with how they’re packed. Each jar is filled and sealed one by one, then frozen and shipped with ice packs to help keep them cold in transit. The jars are cushioned in the box to prevent movement, and each lid is secured to lock in freshness.

Please note: Cake jars may thaw during delivery, but they still need to be refrigerated or frozen immediately upon arrival. We include clear storage instructions on the shipping label and in the care guide inside every order.

Because they contain dairy-based fillings like buttercream and mousse, refrigeration is required. You can also freeze them for later, just thaw before enjoying.

Cake jars stay fresh for up to 3 weeks in the fridge and up to 3 months in the freezer. Whether you're snacking the same day or saving a few for later, they’re made to hold up without losing texture or flavor.

What Makes Cake Jars Different

With cake jars, you’re not just buying dessert. You’re getting something that feels personal, giftable, and full of intention.

They’re different from cupcakes (less mess, better structure). They’re easier to store than slices (no crumbs or cling wrap). And unlike traditional cakes, you can order 4 to 8, and still feel like you're gifting something thoughtful.

No need to cut or decorate. No need to figure out how to travel with it. Just open, scoop, and enjoy.

The Story Behind the Layers

Melissa’s process is simple, but consistent. She starts with flavor. The cake layers are moist, evenly baked, and hand-assembled.

The fillings aren’t just buttercream; they include mousse, ganache, curds, and whipped toppings, depending on the flavor. And each jar is built in the same order every time for consistency across every batch.

Every jar is also labeled with the recipient’s name and flavor to avoid mix-ups, especially for gift orders. It’s the small details that matter, and we build every jar like we’re shipping it to someone we know.

So, What’s Inside a Cake Jar?

Two layers of cake. A rich, balanced filling. A tight seal. A little label. And a lot of joy. Whether you’re shopping for someone else or craving a midweek treat, cake jars make it easy to celebrate without overthinking it.

They're compact. They're cute. They're craveable. And once you’ve had one, you’ll want to keep a few stocked in your fridge, just in case.

Why Cake Jars Keep Getting Ordered Again (and Again)

It’s more than just cake in a jar, it’s about how it’s made, how it holds up, and how easy it is to send joy to someone else (or yourself).

Whether you’re trying one for the first time or stocking up on your favorite flavors, cake jars turn small moments into sweet ones. You don’t need a party. You just need a spoon.
